For the second time in three years, a Pulitzer Prize-winning story has featured a piece of Knight Lab technology.
On Monday, the Daily Breeze won the prize in local reporting for its work investigating California’s Centinela Valley Union High School District and its superintendent’s outsize salary.
Featured prominently in the series of stories was an instance of TimelineJS, Knight Lab’s timeline building tool, which the Breeze used to highlight important events in the superintendent’s career.
Daily Breeze executive editor Michael A. Anastasi drew attention to the timeline in a letter to the Pulitzer judges, writing that with TimelineJS the publication “leveraged our archives to show the superintendent’s machinations through the years.”
This week marked the second time TimelineJS has been featured prominently in a paper’s award-winning coverage and award submission. In 2013 the technology was featured in the Denver Post’s coverage of the Aurora Theater Shooting.
The use of timeline by organizations big and small on important stories is evidence that the Lab is fulfilling its mission of helping all publishers tell interesting stories online, said Knight Lab co-founder Owen Youngman.
“We are accomplishing one of the key things we set out to do — helping even tiny newsrooms without staffs of engineers use technology to help their readers navigate and understand events and issues that are key to them,” he said.
The Daily Breeze has seven metro reporters on staff.
TimleineJS is Knight Lab’s most popular piece of technology. It has been used by more than 300,000 storytellers around the world and has seen by more than 189 million people.
