Kicking off a new, international fellowship with Manuel Aristarán

As we traveled to various conferences and events last year, we met a number of fascinating nerds doing digital journalism work in Latin America, Europe and Africa. We learned a lot from talking and hacking with them, but just as we were getting going, the event would end. We wanted more time to talk to these journalists, and even work with them, and we wanted to connect them to our wider community back home.

Manuel Aristarán was a 2013 Knight-Mozilla Fellow

Today, we are so excited to announce our first International Journalism-Technologist fellowship. Our inaugural fellow is Manuel Aristarán, from Argentina and he will be joining the Lab in April.

Since this is our first time organizing something like this, we're considering this a pilot program. (Fortunately, Aristarán has experience in the aerospace industry.)

Here's the gist: Fellows will bring a specified project to develop in the Lab, concurrently with staff projects, technology and research. During Aristarán’s fellowship, he will be continuing the development of the Tabula PDF open source project that he began as a 2013 Knight-Mozilla OpenNews fellow.

In addition to project development, visiting fellows will enhance the Lab’s student fellowship program through workshops, clinics, presentations and one-on-one mentoring. We'll also be plugging our visiting fellows into Medill’s global initiative, events and related courses.

This program could not have come together with out the substantial support of Owen Youngman, a founding Knight Lab faculty member, and Medill School faculty member Mei-ling Hopgood, who is leading the school's global student opportunities.

Please contact us at knightlab@northwestern.edu with questions, input, ideas and insights.
