New team member: Director of Software Engineering

Joe Germuska

We are pleased to announce that Joe Germuska will be joining the Lab as the Director of Software Engineering. He joins us from The Chicago Tribune, where he has worked as a news apps developer for the past couple of years, and brings with him twenty years of software design and development experience. We are all atingle with excitement.

In his tenure at The Chicago Tribune, Germuska was instrumental in building out their crime, elections and schools applications, among many other substantial projects. As a leader in the journalism/news/media–technology community, both nationally and internationally, Germuska also hosts a weekly radio show on WNUR-FM – Conference of the Birds – as well as volunteering his time with Open Government Chicago(-land)Hacks/Hackers Chicago and ONA Chicago.

Germuska is a 2012 Knight News Challenge grantee for a project that furthers the Investigative Reporters and Editors census project – census.ire.org – funded with a $450,000 grant. During the previous year, he was a team member for the 2011 Knight News Challenge award to the PANDA project, which came with a $150,000 grant and was built to help news organizations better use public information.

Germuska will be starting his new position in the beginning of December.
